QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • I'm having trouble deciding what type of unit and filter to get. Also, I have a water softener. Will that affect the filter life? Do you have to use pre-softened water? I have high levels of Perchlorate and my doctor recommended a Berkey filter. Any help would be appreciated. Also, it is a two person household. Thank you

Hi there, those are great questions. The Berkey water filter should not be used with a water softener as it is not well suited to sodium or potassium water - tests have shown that the filter deteriorates and plugs in that application. Additionally, the Berkey has never been tested for the removal of percholate.

If you need to reduce percholate you may need to consider one of three types of solutions articulated by the EPA:
"Regenerable and single-pass ion exchange, reverse osmosis, and fixed- and fluidized-bed biological treatment can all remove perchlorate from drinking water sources."

Of those 3, the one that is most commonly available residentially would be the Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration System (Click this link to see).

  • How does it do with particulates. Our well water has sand and fine silt.

The Berkey ceramic filter is a great choice for water with particulates like sand and silt. It will easily remove sand and silt from your drinking water. Like any mechanical filter, certain types of particulates will slow water flow rate. When you notice the rate has significantly slowed, simply remove the filter and brush it briskly under running water. A green Scotch brite scour pad or a stiff nylon bristled brush is all that's needed. Once that is done, simply re-install the filters and you're all set. Unlike the black BB9 filters, these ceramic filters do not need to be primed when they've been cleaned which makes them a great choice when you've got source water that has a high level of particlulates.

  • How long does it take to filter water

That's a great question! The Big Berkey with 2 BB9 black filters should fill in 2-4 hours, on average a little over 3 hours. The actual time depends on variations in the manufacture of each filter, the local water condition and also how well the filters were prepped and primed. Many people fill up at night so they wake up to a full tank.

  • Does it filter metals (copper)?

Yes the BB9 Black Berkey filters have been tested to reduce Copper metal levels by 99.9%. Other metals that are removed like this are lead, iron, chromium, manganese and many more.
    Hope this is helpful!

  • Is there a warranty?

Good question! Yes - new Berkey systems come with a full manufacturer warranty. Additionally, we have a 30 day happiness guarantee - during this period we will work with you as much as needed - whether you simply need some assistance in setting up the system or help troubleshooting any aspect of the system... during this time you can return the product for a full refund (less return postage costs).

    Have an amazing dayy!
