QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Why do I need a ceramic filter or a black filter?

    That's a great question!
The ceramic filters are a tried and true technology developed in the 1800's and still in use today worldwide. They are simple to set up and can be put in use quickly without any preparation other than rinsing them off and installing them into the Berkey. They have a wide range of contaminate effectiveness and are aboslutely great for natural water source regions where there is not an abundance of man-made toxins like drugs or heavy metal run-off.
The black Berkey filters were designed to be a better match for urban living and the more contemporary demands of that type of urbanization. Their effectiveness extends to drugs and other man-made toxins. From a cost point of view, the ceramic Berkey Filter systems are less expensive, but do have a higher operating cost as the filters are designed to last 6 months or 535 gallons each. The Black Berkey water filter systems have a higher initial cost, are a little more work to put into operation (the priming process) but do last 3000 gallons per filter or 6000 gallons per pair.
They are both great filters. The preference for either one is usually based on personal views of the set-up difficulty and the initial versus operating cosst. Hope this helps... Have a great day!
